Alexander Ross - “Grandfather Paradox Part II” [excerpt] | LISTEN ...

John Cale (remixed by Tim Hecker, Maria Minerva, and Actress)

Extra Playful: Transitions [remixes]

Nah, it’s not a dream team if you just remix tracks separate from collaborative works. But, yo, there’s potential here. I mean, what a grouping that would be: Cale, Minerva, Actress, and Hecker. Holy shit. (Saw Minerva live on Sunday and it was the bee’s knees. Here is another one of her efforts live as crooner-collaborator.) What do you think? Think they should all smash together they’s music styles? It might be hot. Maybe not video hot, but audio — I don’t mind ripping my ear buds to shreds. So, yeah. Hear are some remixes. Can’t believe I’m still posting remixes. But people keep making ‘em. #usingtheforce

By the way, these tracks are taken from the John Cale 12-inch that Double Six released on Record Store Day, which also featured remixes by Leyland Kirby and Alva Noto. Double Six will have a small batch of them for sale on its website starting next Tuesday, May 1.

Young Smoke

Astronaut Status 1.0 [album preview]

Last year, Chicago footwork producer Young Smoke released three albums: Gutta House Muzik 1.0, The Flight Zone 1 & 2, and The Space Zone. I heard none of them (if you find a copy, get a hold of me!). But I’m happy to hear that Young Smoke has a shit-ton of releases due this year, including — bear with me — Disco Flight, Pluto Lounge, Smoketronix, Astronaut Status Planet Invader 2.0, Gutta House Muzik 2.0, Flight Society (with fellow Flight Muzik cohorts, DJ Diamond and DJ Metro), and, most excitingly, a Planet Mu full-length called The Space Cadet, due sometime in September. (You can hear three of his tracks off Planet Mu’s stellar Bangs & Works Vol. 2 comp.)

Whether the releases mentioned above are LPs, EPs, singles, or USB sticks shoved in gummy vaginas is not 100% clear, but we do know that, in addition to the Planet Mu release, Young Smoke is set to drop an album this summer called Astronaut Status 1.0. The preview below is presumably a mix of some of its tracks, much like the Space Zone and Gutta House previews from last year. It sounds like his planetary aesthetic hasn’t changed much — we still have airy synths, militaristic shuffles, stuttering snares, and spaced-out melodies — but that’s a good thing: no footwork sounds like this, and I love it.

Starring

“the best”

The rustling start of “the best” is a good transition between Northern Spy Records’ free-jazz outputs and Starring’s newest joint ABCDEFG-HIJKLMNOP-QRSTUV-WXYZ. Now, they ain’t no Guardian Alien when it comes to recorded performance music, but you can hear how Starring juxtaposes bass lines, drum beats, and sighing-screeching electronics just before falling into a pattern, then “SIMPLY THE BEST.” It presents a purposeful performance-driven outlet, as most of Northern Spy’s peeps have attained. They ain’t just giving you a one point performance, either. It’s the whole package of five people doing that same sort of “we’re giving you something that’ll help your mind more than your ears” vibe. See if they touring your way anytime soon. And don’t forget to check out ABCDEFG-HIJKLMNOP-QRSTUV-WXYZ June 12 on Northern Spy. Also, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LEAD SINGER CLARA HUNTER!!

Turning the Clock Back: #Giveaway: Ozeri electric pepper grinder

I spend a lot of time in the kitchen cooking, which I usually enjoy.  I love trying new foods, recipes and kitchen gadgets trying to come up with meals that are tasty but also quick and easy to clean up after.  There is not a lot of gourmet French cuisine and flambeed with kitchen torches...I don't have that kind of time!   I was recently given the chance to try out a couple of products from Ozeri, a manufacturer of many products for the modern home.  If you have never heard of Ozeri, here is some information about them from their website:
Ozeri products are of a pedigree for ultra-luxury markets we serve, where five-star residences are matched with the finest kitchen, bath, entertainment, and personal amenities. We incorporate award-winning designs, innovative materials, and durable construction for long product satisfaction.

Ozeri offers numerous products for kitchen, bath, health and fitness, and entertaining.  They have a very clean and elegant look and are designed to remind you of products you would find while at an upscale vacation destination.

For my review, I was sent the electronic Artesio  Electric Pepper Grinder shown above.  This is a durable ceramic grinder made with a fingerprint resistant exterior and a very elegant design.  It has a built in light at the bottom for low light dining and an easy to adjust grind adjustor.

My opinion?  I like the look of this grinder and it is very comfortable and very light weight to hold.  This is the first electric grinder I have used (we have a manual one right now) and there were things I liked about it and a few things I would change.  I had no trouble taking it apart and putting the batteries and pepper corns in, although had a little bit of difficulty reassembling.  Once I got it back together, I thought the unit worked very well.  It has a push button activated grinder which is great when I have one hand stirring or covered in something I don't want on my grinder.  I thought the well for peppercorns was a little small considering how much pepper I go through in my house.  I think I will save this for 'specialty' peppercorns like the multicolored or other exotic blends I sometimes see.  I thought it was a little loud but I am not used to an electric grinder so it could be totally normal.
I also received the 12 inch ceramic frying pan to try out.  It is covered in a PTFE free and PFOA free ceramic coating that contains no harmful metals or chemicals.  It offers a very durable and scratch resistant non stick surface.  It has an oven safe handle and is very easy to clean.

My opinion?  I was very pleased with this pan.  It seems very sturdy and well made and the interior surface was large enough for me to fry 4 fish fillets without crowding.  Cleanup was amazingly easy...just a smidge of soap, hot water and a sponge...no scrubbing required at all!  Really loved it and it will certainly make cleanup go quickly!

Should I buy the meat grinder and sausage attachment on my ...

Question by Ken M : Should I buy the meat grinder and sausage attachment on my blender cuisinart?
Or should I just buy a grinder that is specific for meat grinding? I already have the console and do not plan to be a sausage factory, but it would be good to grind my own meat. I was wondering what were some experiments with room jointe.Meilleure response:

I can not speak for this attachment, but I bought an old mill iron in his hand a garage sale several years ago that works very well. I think it costs about five dollars.

Krueger Coffee Maker: Saeco GT-1 Titan Conical Burr Grinder Review

Saeco GT-1 Titan Conical Burr Grinder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this grinder for my wife this last Christmas. It's been two months now, and we are very happy with it. In this price range, I found 3 choices - Saeco Titan, Capresso 560 Infinity Burr Grinder, Black, and Breville BCG450XL Ikon Conical Burr Grinder. Burr grinders in the ~$50 range seemed unattractive (=not worth the money) from the reviews here. Both Capresso and Breville had consistently good reviews, Saeco Titan appeared to be a new model and did not have any. I decided to go find them all in a store and compare - well, easier said than done... In a major urban area, the only place where I found any of these grinders was a bigger Bed Bath and Beyond store (you'll see what I mean if you go to their website and look for a location near you; don't go to a regular BBBY). There was this model there, along with Capresso 564 - a more expensive, chrome, version of the $90 Capresso 560. I looked at both closely, and it didn't take long to choose the Saeco. Even though the Capresso felt heavier, more "solid" (at $139!), I liked less the design of the burr assembly and collar. Saeco also seemed easier to open, and the dial's position on the side more convenient. And yes, it is indeed made in Switzerland. The price was $130, but I had BBBY's 20% off coupon...
One thing I should stress, while we have used the Titan for 2 months, we have no experience using the Capresso model. It is of course entirely possible that, while having failed to impress me at the store, Capresso might actually grind better, who knows?.. I can speak for the Titan, though. For us the Titan does the job well enough. Easy to use, consistent operation, not too loud, and of course, a huge improvement over our previous $30 grinder. Will it grind fine enough for you? Well, it definitely does not grind fine enough for a proper Turkish coffee, but then none of these machines will. You'd have to pay more - many times the $130. You'll be better off buying Turkish-ground coffee from a good supplier or, if you must have it absolutely fresh, get one of those old-fashioned hand-driven coffee mills. I saw quite a few here on Amazon. Expect to pay ~$150 and need a set of strong hands, but those *will* give you the finest grinds.
We use our Titan at the coarsest setting and brew in French press, it seems perfect for that. Clean, consistent grind, no dust, and excellent brew, great taste.
One last thing I thought could be helpful if you don't get to see these grinders in a store - they all are smaller than they appear in pictures and take little space.

Using a conical burr grinder for coffee beans preserves the most aroma with reduced heat to protect the essential oils and flavors of coffee. Equipped with high-precision cnc-milled conical burrs, this coffee-bean grinder ensures an even grind for quality espresso and drip brew. The grinder's 60-second timer and 12 grind settings, from coarse to fine, allow a variety of grinds to fit each personal brew style. Grind for use with drip, French press, espresso, or even Turkish coffee. Other thoughtful details include automatic shut-off, an anti-static device, and an 8-ounce bean hopper and 6-1/2-ounce ground-coffee container that remove for easy clean-up. Its elegant design matches well with any high-end kitchen decor, while cord storage and a compact shape make it easy to stow the grinder away when not in use. Housed in durable ABS plastic, the UL-listed burr grinder measures 7 by 7-7/8 by 11-8/9 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Andrew Weathers - “Taking Names Blues” | WATCH | Chocolate ...

The electric guitar is no stranger to the worlds of ambient and drone. Often we hear guitars drenched in layers of reverb and echo, serving as a melodic fixture within a bold ambient landscape. The guitar also frequently functions as the motor behind drone music and is probably too often mistaken as being analog synthesizers. Andrew Weathers makes music that certainly has ambient tendencies, but it stars the acoustic guitar in a drone-like setting. While modern drone music can often be witnessed mingling with shades of folk and Americana styles, Weathers makes modern Americana music while mingling with drone characters.

The sepia-toned-out video for “Taking Names Blues” does a very fine job of depicting the auditory happenings within the lead-off track of Andrew Weathers’ split cassette with Ancient Ocean — out on Rubber City Noise. The video features four separate quadrants of film. The first and fourth quadrants show visions of driving past leafless trees, icy bodies of water, and telephone wires; while the second and third quadrants feature spinning footage of these winter trees. The changing landscape follows Weathers’ aimless yet steady finger-plucking journey on his acoustic guitar through classic American raga themes, while the constant yet dizzying images imitate the rotating undertone of drone that sticks with the recording throughout. Ancient Ocean’s side of the tape also features mesmerizing guitar motifs, but they play a bit more of a supporting role.

Mount Eerie

“Lone Bell”

First, there was “House Shape,” now there is “Lone Bell.” As a certified Mount Eerie fan, I have to admit that I am, for once in my stupid life, happy. Check out “Lone Bell” below. It has moody horns, and it is modestly towering, and it is one of the better songs I’ve heard from Elverum since, well, “House Shape.” Listen to that bassline!

Clear Moon, the first of two Mount Eerie full-lengths due this year, is out May 22 on P.W. Elverum & Sun. I’ll be camping out starting this weekend. Who’s with me? JK. I’ll probably order online.

Sissy Spacek

“Interlock”

The secret to grindcore’s glory is very simple: it says what it needs to say, very loudly, in seconds. The LA shredders in Sissy Spacek obey these tenets to a “t” — or rather, to a TNT: “Interlock” is a spazzy, unforgiving noisegasm that, at 33 seconds, wastes no time in launching its aural assault. Sure, your chances of deciphering the lyrics are nonexistent, but words are irrelevant when you’ve got music as acerbic and nitro-fueled as this.

Grinder Recap | bike29.com

assembling the roll out

Sunday marked the 5th annual running of the Gravel Grinder. Once again, we were lucky with the weather, in that it had poured hard all Saturday night, but let up for the day during the event. A big nasty weather system has moved into the region for the next few days. While it was far from sunny and warm, we did have a nice window of non rain. It was chilly, with a yucky north wind, but it was a good temp for cranking up steep hills on bikes!

flying up Perry Hill

We rolled about 150 riders this year, by the far the most we’ve had. It’s really encouraging to see folks brave the less than stellar riding conditions. I saw lots of familiar faces, all of them with smiles on them. This really was a fun event, and I don’t know if it was because we’ve been putting it on for all these years or what, but set up and take down went off like a well oiled machine.

tailgating

I ran the aid station once again this year, and this time even remembered water. The offerings this year were pretzels, bananas, gummie bears, twizzlers, 5 kinds of booze, meatbars, cheese, bread and bacon. Regular and boozy chocolate covered.
That’s how we roll.

mmmm bacon

The fast guys came cruising in about an hour after start, which is what I was expecting. I’m actually pretty happy with my course mapping time of 2:32, the fast guys, and they are seriously fast, got in at just over 2 hours. They of course did not stop for chocolate covered bacon and attitude adjustments, instead they flew by, but shortly thereafter more riders began trickling in, and before I knew it, we had a full blown party!

lead group

Most everyone had made it to the aid station after about 2 hours from start, so it was time to break it down and head back to base for tacos and beer. It was great to have so many folks this year, all of them stoked. And they should be, they rode a tough course in less than perfect weather, not to mention that this is the first ride that a lot of these folks have done this season. My hat is off to everyone that participated this year.

the place to be

There are some people who are integral to the machinery of this ride. We had a lot of additional help this year that made this the best Grinder to date. A big thank you has to go out to Ryan at MTBVT, who designed the art for this year’s shirt and made some sponsor connections for us. Cris at Factotum always does a killer job, and screening 150+ shirts to perfection is no easy task. Nat Fish is always there with the muscle to help move the heaviest tables in the universe, and the truck to haul everything around, and without his help, it would have taken Dough, Ginger and I a lot longer to mark the course in the rain the night prior. The post ride meal provided by Frida’s is clearly the highlight of everyone’s day. But the one person that makes this event what is, is Mandy. She gets it done. She’s the one that organizes everything and brings it all together. Without her, this event would be a comical farce. If you are reading this and appreciate all the work she has done this year, feel free to thank her in whiskey. She likes the really peaty stuff.

So please forgive me if you are not on the following list, a lot of hands went into making this Grinder the awesome good time it was. Aaron, Tab, Barb and Carrie helped made set up and registration a breeze. Meg and Keller made the best cookies ever. Frida’s, VT Smoke and Cure, Cabot, Elmore Mountain Bread kept our bellies full, Green Mountain Distillers and Long Trail helped to wash it all down. KP let me set up the mobile party wagon in her front yard. The Pilgrim Partnership gave us the parking lot to make this happen, the Town of Waterbury did a bang up job of grooming the gravel portions of our ride. Thanks to Zack, who swept the course and pulled the course markings, BY BIKE!

Zackalicious

But most of all, thanks to all the hardy souls that braved the weather and came out and rode. We hope to see you all next year!
