Metal workers - need help on making a surface grinder...
I am working with steel diamond plate and need to take off the diamonds on several plates about one inch in from the edge of the sheet. I wanted a clean look, so I only need to go down far enough until the diamond is gone and it is smooth.

The closest I can come to my own machine, and without a mill machine, is somehow take a bench table grinder and set it up where it has a table and fence style set up, where I can put the plate of diamond against the fence, with the rotation of the grinder towards me, adjusting the table so that only about an inch of the edge of the plate will go under the grinding wheel and slowly push the plate into (below) the grinding wheel taking the diamond off in small increments.

Unless someone has a better idea? Also, any thought on how to make the base for the grinder or table itself? Should the grinder be fixed and the table adjust for width and height? Thanks!

Acid etch to remove embedded diamonds using appropriate acid for substrate metal (ferric chloride?), then smooth & polish.

I have no idea if this would work, but maybe worth a try?

So you want to reinvent the hand held grinder ...
Just buy or rent one and knock it out.

Angle grinder with sanding pad reducing grit as you get close ! Then flap sander to remove grinder marks ! Buff with white buffing compound until polished ! This does require sober skill ! I can do it but it depends on your skill !

Do not do what you have in mind. You will hurt yourself. A grinder has a lot of torque and as soon as the disk gets clogged up its going to stick and throw the metal, and more then likely cutting you pretty bad or really messing up your metal. Don't try and reinvent the wheel just take your time and grind it down by hand. If you want a clean look tape off the flat part of the metal that you don't want to mess up and grind down the diamond.

Your definitely asking this on the wrong forum. lol. 99% here know nothing of metal work. If you have question on doom or how were all going to die any time now this is the place.

Or if you have a Bridgeport mill you can cut it down that way. BTW what type of diamond plate are you using? Steel, aluminum, polished or unfinished?

Buy different plate instead next time? Seriously I'm a boilermaker and this seems like a lot of work you are making for yourself.

Put it on a concrete flagstone and do the 'rinse on ~ rinse off' karate technique until your plate is flat ...

This might work honestly if you set it up right to take of the required amount.
Angle grinder will make it messy.
Have you considered just welding flat plat onto the sides where you need it flat? That would be quicker.

lol. yeah, I wouldn't do it without it being securely clamped down to a mill table. Or on a REAL surface grinder.
Wouldn't want a piece of metal flying into my stomach...
