The hugely popular dating app Grindr has been hacked in Sydney, Australia. It’s being reported that sensitive profile information and steamy chat sessions have been potentially exposed and could be now out in the open. Last year Grindr had a reported 100,000 users in Australia and over a million worldwide. Click the link below for some excerpts from the article at the Sydney Morning Herald and a link to the full article…
From the full article by Ben Grubb:
The hacker discovered a way to log in as another user, impersonate that user, chat and send photos on their behalf.
The vulnerabilities are also present in Blendr, the straight version of the app, according to a security expert who said both apps had “no real security” and were “poorly designed”. Fairfax Media is not aware that Blendr has been hacked but the potential was there, according to the security expert.
The founder of the apps, Joel Simkhai, conceded both were vulnerable and he was rushing to release a patch to address the issues. He said he had originally been waiting until new architecture was built “within weeks” but was now releasing an update to both apps “over the next few days”.
Given the wide-spread appeal and popularity of the app I don’t think this will detour users much in the short-term. Although it will probably be a PR nightmare as long as they plug the security leak Grindr should be able to recover. Hopefully no prominent government officials or conservative haters are discovered with Grindr profiles shopping for fresh meat. It is a little disturbing though that it seems from the article that Grindr was aware the security issue was there they took a very passive role in attending to it. Shame on them.
