This is new to me. I have never done it this way. Usually I disassemble the whole grinder, as much as I can and wipe, and rinse it to the best of my ability. Here is a great way, that I have found, which can save you some time and scrubbing.
Cleaning services, that used to take care of the coffee machines in the office suggested this one. Turns out I was the only newbie into this, and many people have used rice for cleaning the grinders. I have to use uncooked, white rice for the task. If you have a blade grinder, like most people have, fill it up with rice, just enough to cover the blades with it. If you use a burr grinder instead, put 2 tablespoons of rice into it and set on the finest grinding setting. The espresso setting should work just fine.
After you grind the rice for some time, take a look inside. Large clumps of ground coffee will be powdered. Dump out the rice grounds and you should be able to see some places and spots, that you could not have cleaned otherwise, or at least with much more effort. The inside of the grinder should be also cleaned perfectly. Cleaners in London say, that the coffee rancid oils are attached to the rice. They are attracted to the starch in the rice. This is exactly why this thing does work, and rather well, I must say.
You may repeat this process as many times as you have, until all of the coffee residual is gone. A word of advice here – before making the coffee again, run a “blank” dose of coffee beans through the grinder. This will remove any rice residuals, which are not to be that much, but this will ensure that your coffee does not taste like rice, when you make it.
Now that the grinder is free of the old coffee beans the taste of the new coffee should be most exquisite and delicious.
