The Ax Grinder: Giveaway Innovation – Sentenced to the Senate ...

www.sodahead.com

Welcome back to the Ax Grinder.

Please remember: Posts in this series are for your entertainment, only.  I offer them to you to run with as you see fit, to use, abuse, or discuss.  I am not a political person, and would blather sadly in a political debate.  Still, and all…

I didn’t think I’d have a new one so quickly, but this idea popped up yesterday while I was driving.

These days members of the US government pretty much buy their positions—or at least, that’s the way it seems to me.  If you have the money, and the connections you can get the “votes” and the job.

But what if the Senate and the House were filled a different way.

What if being a member of the government was not a purchased privilege, but was instead a sentence carried out in a court of law?

What if you were sentenced to X days (or years) to the Senate?  Not bad, you say?

Perhaps…

But, what if as a member of Congress, you were in constant and critical public scrutiny (not just bi-partisan jabbing)?  What if by law you could only live on the salary provided with the job, and you were not allowed to accept gifts, favors, or even meals from your family during your sentence?  What if you had to live in a barracks with the other members?  What if  the only way out was to meet certain commitments per week, month and year to even begin to qualify to be released?  What if physical labor was included in your sentence?  Keep up your own barracks?  Wash your own clothes?  Take turns cooking for each other?

What if proof of corruption was punishable by summary execution?

And what if there were guards to keep you honest, and cameras feeding live to the Internet?  Why, Congress might become the world’s best “Reality Show”.

Now, some questions for you… (assuming you either like this idea, or think it would be fun for a story)

What would you add?  How would you ensure that the work got done?  How would you keep congress honest?

Your thoughts?
