PORTSMOUTH — A butcher working at McKinnon’s Market lost part of his thumb during a meat-grinder accident Tuesday, said Assistant Fire Chief Steve Achilles.
Firefighters and emergency medical technicians were dispatched to the 2454 Lafayette Road market at about 2 p.m. on Jan. 10 when a 55-year-old man caught his hand in a “pounder grater,” said Achilles. When responders arrived, the man was conscious and alert and did not need to be extricated from the machine, said Achilles.
He had caught part of his left hand, between his thumb and first finger, in the grinder and part of his thumb was amputated, said the assistant fire chief.
The man was given medication and bleeding was controlled before he was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital, said Achilles.
