Philadelphia Register of Wills Ron Donatucci recently accepted a $370,000 DROP payment, then “retired,” then went back to work, because that is what this city’s political system allows politicians to do, and if you were in city government, you’d do it, too. After being written about, he says he’s currently working on giving some of that money back to the city for good causes. “I’m doing an analysis right now on the interest part of it because two of the years that it was accumulated during this period were years when the city lost money,” he recently said. “I don’t think it’s fair to take the 4.5 percent interest during those years.” Where’s he going to put the extra funds after his analysis? Pools and libraries! It’ll be like the whole thing never happened! Deferred retirement what?
Here’s what Mayor Michael Nutter has to say about the Greater Area Catholic School closings: “I’ve talked to Archbishop Chaput about today’s announcement, and I look forward to working with him to ensure that all young people, whether students in parochial or public schools, receive high-quality educations. Economic recession and demographic change have affected any number of institutions in far reaching ways. It’s certainly true for the City of Philadelphia. It’s true for the Philadelphia School District, and now the Archdiocese faces some very tough decisions. During this period of change, let’s not forget that we are one city, and we’re all in this together. Now is a time for partnership and support for the young persons in our city so that everyone knows that they have high-quality educational options in the City of Philadelphia.”
And here’s what he has to say about his recent trip to Denver, to check out the school system: “They are focused on–similar to what we’ve been talking about here–a system of great schools…They have what anyone would call regular public schools, charter schools; they have something called innovation schools, looking at it as one complete system making sure there is seamless transition and transparency throughout that process.”
The Washington Post has noticed former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum is totally eating up all the young people in his town hall crowds who truly hate him, and his guts. He gets yelled at all the time for his conservative belief system, which doesn’t waver, ever. And his bickering with the New Hampshire kids—many of whom, it turns out, are often from out of state—could work, of course, because “The conservative movement likes nothing better than a martyr for the cause.”
Jerry Sandusky’s book—both ironically and horrifyingly titled “Touched”—helped police find victims 3, 4, 5 and 7 in Sandusky’s alleged kids’ choir of horrors. Apparently after the boy who’d come to be known as Victim 6 came forward, his mother flipped through the pages of “Touched” and identified specific kids who’d likely been abused by the former Penn State coach.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie may have made a violent, sexually-charged remark toward an Occupy protester in New Hampshire. At an event for Christie-endorsed Republican Mitt Romney, the NJ Guv. was getting interrupted by protesters, who said he and Mitt both killed jobs, or something. Christie must have heard the term “going down,” because he told a female audience member: “Something’s going down tonight, but it ain’t going to be jobs, sweetheart.”
Rep. Bob Brady’s potential primary challenger is already attacking him—for being a GOP hack! That challenger, Jimmie Moore, who recently opened shop on Spring Garden Street, penned an “open letter” to Brady, saying Philly’s Democrat boss had a role in passing the new redistricting map which favors Republicans, so he could keep his own district intact. “It has been widely reported that Republican leaders in the General Assembly turned to you to secure the necessary votes for passage. Some speculate that you agreed to do this in exchange for a favorable re-drawing of your own congressional district. While the Democratic party as a whole was the big loser in the redistricting process, you were among the biggest winners,” it reads.
