Mayor Michael Nutter held a Martin Luther King, Jr. event yesterday at Enon Tabernacle Church and offered this money quote: “Can we be nonviolent for just one day in this city?” He continued: “We need to be champions of non-violence ourselves. We are one city, one community. There is only one Philadelphia,” he said. “When someone gets shot, killed, stabbed, robbed or beaten, each of us should feel the effect. I’m trying to figure out how to have a safer city. This is not the Philadelphia we want to be. This is not the city that Dr. King would want.”
Former Rep. Patrick Murphy, who wants to be Attorney General, has never tried a case in Pennsylvania and doesn’t have a law license in Pennsylvania. He apparently took the Minnesota exam, since the results would come quicker and then was admitted into the Pennsylvania bar in 2004, based on his passing of the Midwestern state’s test.
If you’re going to be convicted of seven counts of mail fraud and five counts of aggravated identity theft, it might as well be this way: David Ballard obtained and stole the identities of more than 1,300 people. He used their credit card information to open Internet payment accounts in their names, bought expensive stuff, had it shipped to those people’s real addresses, then intercepted the items—usually heavy-duty electronics. When police raided his Germantown storage facility, they found more than $55,000 worth of equipment, including an iPod with thousands of people’s personal information he’d stolen.
It was originally reported that Rick Santorum came in 5th place in New Hampshire. After all the numbers came in, he’s actually fourth (which is OK for him.) And more people are saying Newt Gingrich may drop out and endorse him. Now, hear this: Santorum is statistically tied with President Barack Obama in Florida, which will be a key state in the 2012 election. Fifty-two percent of voters in Florida say the president doesn’t deserve a second term in office.
One-hundred-and-thirty pounds of seized cocaine at Philadelphia International Airport makes this past weekend’s discovery the largest cocaine seizure in Philadelphia history. The previous record: A measly 55 pounds found a decade ago.
A recent study from U.S. News and World Report notes that of the students coming out of college with the most debt, LaSalle and St. Joe’s are both in the Top 10. Students average more than $45,000 in debt from both schools.
State Rep. Tony Payton, who has both defeated a write-in candidate backed by Marge Tartaglione and donated to Jimmie Moore, the Democrat who’s set to face Rep. Bob Brady in the Congressional Democratic primary, thinks redistricting made him a constituent of Rep. Allyson Schwartz (the Nancy Pelosi of the East…remember?) instead of Brady’s and guess why: “I think he took me out of the district out of fear,” Payton said. As Heard in the Hall reports, there are a few holes in that paranoid theory.
