Size Cost No Static problems Good range of grind settings Great customer support
Mostly plastic construction Coarse grind setting produces fines
This is our second Maestro. The first was marketed under the Solis brand and gave us eight years of completely trouble free service. The unit failed after trying to grind a small rock that somehow wound up in the beans it was trying to grind. I was unable to repair the damage. I ordered a refurbished Maestro direct from Baratza. The cost was $40 less than the $129 we paid for the first Maestro. The only difference I can see between the two is the original came with a timer, this one has a simple on/off rotary switch. The grinder is used exclusively for drip coffee. However, I did test it dialing the grind down to the finer espresso settings. It can be used for espresso, it will grind fine enough. To be sure the results are not equal to what I get using the Macap M4 but the coffee was drinkable. This is similar to my experience with the original Maestro.
As others have reported, the Maestro produces fines and is not the best choice for French press, although again, it will do in a pinch. The conical burr set seems well made. I did not need to replace the burrs on the original after eight years of daily use.
Straight forward, easy to use, trouble free, on line transaction.
