Do you think I'd be better to save for the longer shaft or just get the shorter. The impatience in me wants to get the cheaper so I can finish my carving off before I ruin by trying to get the detail in with the wrong tool.

Phil, the advantage with the long neck style grinder is you can get your whole guide hand warped around the tool giving more control. You also want to avoid the grinders that have the motor stop right where you will want to grip the tool. Those types that look more like small routers are not well suited for carving. The three brands that I recommend are very similar in costs Makita, Bosch, Metabo as far as I know they are made in the same factory. The thing with cheap grinders they tend to get hot in your hand. The tools have much less copper windings and the bearings tend to be smaller with fewer of them. For most peoples uses that wont matter they will use a grinder once in a great while to sharpen a lawnmower blade or to cut a piece of metal. But carvers will use the grinder for prolong periods of time.
