FOGBEES: Sunday Morning Gravel Grinder Ride in Hickman County

Little bit of a reach, but thought I would post this if anyone had an interest in joining our ride.

We put on rides about once a month over in Hickman County(east of Nashville) that are done almost entirely on gravel roads. These rides are NOT road bike friendly with most of the riders using 29er mountain bikes, some of the riders riding cyclocross bikes and a few adventurous riders on touring bikes with cross tires. This Sunday we will be meeting at East Hickman High School on Hwy 7 at 9:00 for a 40-50 mile ride. This ride will feature many creek crossings(some as deep as 2 feet), steep hills, and beautiful scenery. We usually average between 10-13 mph on these rides and for every 10 miles of riding, we come close to 1000 feet of climbing. The last ride we did, we ended up with about 15 riders and I am expecting more than that this time around. We have a buddy system to look out for each other and to make sure no one gets dropped.

Beyond the grinder: Tips on hiring the best fit for your firm — Slaw

There are three types of lawyers at a firm: the finders, the minders, and the grinders. The finders bring in the clients, the minders manage them, and the grinders, well, they carry out the time-consuming, sometimes tedious, and often thankless, tasks for the rest of the group.

Who ends up as those poor worker bees? The junior staffers, naturally; students and junior associates. But, hey, they don’t cost as much as senior lawyers. And they can grow and develop skills like networking and client management.

Maybe. But don’t count on that metamorphosis from grinder to finder or minder — roles that require judgment, strategy, and diplomacy. For that, firms need to watch for some telltale traits when they’re recruiting new hires.

Certainly, candidates’ transcripts are a good start. They can reveal intelligence, work ethic, and perhaps time-management skills. But grades aren’t a good indicator of whether a hire can move beyond the grinder stage.

That’s where the interview comes in, to measure a key determinant of success — “emotional intelligence,” or EI, a term popularized by Daniel Goleman with his best-selling book of the same name. According to different authors on the topic, EI accounts for anywhere from 40 to 80 per cent of success in the workplace, making it more important than raw intelligence and expertise combined.

So how does EI fit into a law firm? And how do you spot it in candidates who might grow beyond the grind? EI has five primary components: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. Watch for these elements, and the behaviours and attitudes that accompany them, when interviewing new hires:

Self-awareness:

• a sense of one’s state of mind and body language

• knowledge of what drives him/her

• accurately assess own strengths and limitations

• self-confidence, assurance of self-worth and capabilities

Self-regulation/self-management:

• keep disruptive emotions and impulses under control

• read others and adjust behaviour to accommodate their mood, opinion, or style

• adapt to change and a readiness to act on opportunities

• optimism, eagerness

• acknowledge one’s shortcomings and work on improving

Motivation:

• demonstrate a drive for a purpose beyond wealth or status

• pursue goals with determination and diligence

Empathy:

• recognize, understand, and anticipate the reactions, feelings, opinions, and perspectives of others

• treat others in accordance with their reactions

Social skills:

• find commonalities with others and build relationships

• build networks and manage social relationships

Interviewers should watch out for candidates who can make realistic self- assessments and show a level of confidence without arrogance. Other ideal candidates are those who see tasks properly executed as rewards in and of themselves — rather than as a stepping-stone to external rewards, since external rewards are often not available on a continual basis.

Whether candidates demonstrate social, political, and cultural sensitivity is another way to assess EI. As is their capacity to follow the interviewer’s conversational lead, in regard to formality or familiarity, for example, or subject matter.

In the past, academic performance could compensate for poor social skills. But new candidates should know that we are now looking for more. Interviewing with all the above elements in mind should improve chances of hiring lawyers who will be long-term assets to the firm — not just grinders.

The legendary Boston post-punk band will release their new album, Unsound, on Fire Records this July. “Dust Devil” is the album opener, and it’s got everything you could want in a MoB song: those familiar chugging riffs, cacophonous bits of feedback, and just enough harmonies to make it go down smooth. I’m not sure if this song was written for the household appliance or the dangerous meteorological phenomenon, but Roger Miller and company make the Dust Devil sound rollicking and rowdy regardless of the context.

Houses shaped like a grinder? | The High Plains Museum

When Goodland was first becoming a town, the people who decided to make Goodland their home needed homes.  This was a building period, as settlers built their own dwellings made from materials they could find easily.  Carpenters would put houses up as fast as they could and for little money, as most settlers did not have a lot to begin with.  These houses were called Coffee Grinder Houses.

A Coffee Grinder House was named because it resembled a coffee grinder.  Coffee Grinder Houses were twenty-four feet by twenty-four feet.  They had four rooms which included a kitchen, living room, and two bedrooms; there was no indoor plumbing in the house.  The houses were built with sheathing or shiplap and were then covered with drop-siding.  The middle of the house roof had a chimney sticking out of it and this is what would heat the entire house. Notice the similarities in the pictures.  You can see the base of the house, the roof and the chimney all in the coffee grinder.

The houses that were built in Goodland were part of Coffee Mill Row.  Several of these types of houses were built on Caldwell Street and earned the name Coffee Mill Row.  Today in Goodland we still have several Coffee Grinder Houses standing between 15th and 16th streets on Caldwell.  Some of the houses have been remodeled and modernized but some remain the same.

There are many remnants of the first settlers in Goodland today. Much of the early architecture still stands in Goodland, especially on main street. Much like Coffee Mill Row, some of the buildings have been updated but some still retain that historic character. For more information on Goodland arctitecture, stop by the museum to pick up a brochure and take a tour of historic structures in Goodland. So come by the museum for some coffee (it’s free!) and learn about the people who settled in Goodland, then take a drive and see the houses these people settled down in, and stop by Olde Westport Spice & Trading Company store to buy some Goodland coffee.
