Finding The Best Coffee Grinder : Coffee for the regular Joe

Shopping for a great coffee grinder can be a tough gig. Most people start with a cheap grinder and realize the old adage of you get what you paid for never was more relevant than when purchasing a coffee grinder.

Your objective is to find a versatile grinder that can achieve the very best grind no matter what setting it was put on. Filter coffee, espresso, French Press, Turkish coffee – you need a machine that can handle any situation. If you’re looking for a quality grinder for your home, then you should be selective with the coffee grinder you choose.

If your bank balance can handle it, you ideally want a grinder with micro and macro grind adjustments, to allow you to really dial down to the best grind setting for your purposes. You are looking for a grinder that no matter which way you set the grind it will, without fail, give you a uniformly, consistent grind each time.

A good quality doserless coffee grinder will not generate nearly as much static as other grinders in the lower price range and below. But one thing to understand is that static in grinders is a function of the type of beans you use. So if you notice a  problem with coffee going everywhere when you lift the lide on your grinder, try different beans.

Now there can be a trade-off with buying a quality coffee grinder like the Rancilio Rocky or the Baratza Vario and that is that commercial quality grinders can be noisy. Buy hey, it is a grinder. Most grinders don’t take more that 30 seconds to give you the fresh grind for your brew as you only want freshly ground beans for your espresso. Believe me, the noise is a small annoyance when you get that golden crema and the aroma fills your kitchen.

So take my word for it coffee lovers and if you forget everything what I have said in this article remember you want the best burr grinder you can get with the money you can afford to spend, one that gives you a consistent uniform grind with versatility.  In my opinion the Baratza Vario and Rancilio Rocky are on the top shelf of home coffee grinders. Their small oddities are soon overshaowed by the outstanding grinding performance and their ability to produce high quality coffee.
