Many professional stone workers believe that the polishing process is the most important of all when it comes to producing finished stone products for the marketplace. After all, no matter how well a stone has been quarried and cut, if its polish is subpar nothing else really matters. For this reason, it is essential that you use great tools such as diamond-surface machines to help you do the job correctly.
For ice sculptures, this has become the weapon of choice in removing the different layers in an efficient yet gentle way so no breakage will occur. This can occur because many of these hand held grinders have a variable speed control. For metal workers, this handy little tool is preferred to the stationary grinders that are bench tops.
Using a variety of handmade chisels and rasps, as well as several power tools equipped with diamond blades, I begin the reductive process of subtracting material and exaggerating and amplifying the natural characteristics of the stone. The spontaneous process of the Direct Method allows for new perspectives and ideas to unfold unexpectedly. The emerging forms begin to influence the surrounding space which helps dictate what the artist should do next.
A good diamond wet stone polisher can create blinding brightness in a good piece of stone. If you are not getting the sheen you are looking for on your piece, the pad may simply need to be replaced. You also may want to ease up on the amount of pressure you are applying to the stone: let the tool do its job with very little help from you.
I then select a complementary stone and fashion it into a base for the sculpture. Both pieces are then carefully drilled and bolted together, and the sculpture is thoroughly cleaned and given a coating of sealer to protect it from the elements. By employing the Direct Carving Method into my work, I seek to combine material innovation with spiritual expression, Stone Polishing Pads to sculpture with an awareness of bringing out the natural beauty and essence possessed from within.
